The carcass feed!

Our summer 2023 carcass feed took place on 1 and 2 July 2023 and was a great success, raising money for vulture conservation. No, don’t leave the page, it’s not as gruesome as it sounds! Well, not quite. If you’ve already visited us at World of Wings or browsed some of our other pages you’ll know that vultures are close to our hearts. In fact, its something of mission for us to help everyone understand and appreciate these remarkable birds. If there’s a more misunderstood family of birds, we’d like to know about them.

To that end we use our ‘Carcass feed’ as a chance to show how the various carrion feeders in the avian clean-up team operate in conditions that, as close as possible, mimic those in birds’ native habitat. Since we have a number of species that live in sub-Saharan Africa, we organise a carcass from a local abattoir and you can see how our different birds deal with it, each in their own specialist way. From our Ruppel’s Griffon vultures, to our White Stork, Batleur eagle and of course our African Pied crow, you’ll be able to see these species interact on a carcass.

As usual, our staff were on hand to explain what was happening and how each species operates and interacts and we hope that everyoone found the event something of a education as well as a natural ‘African’ spectacle. This summer’s carcass feed day featured a raffle to win one of our Experiences as well as other prizes. There was also a chance to win an opportunity to fly one of our vultures. Keen wildlife and bird photographers were able to get closer to the action by getting out into the field, in return for a donation to the Horstman Trust, a vulture breeding and conservation charity.

So if you missed the last feeding event, why not come along and join us next year and help us raise funds for these fantastic and vital creatures. As days out in Scotland go, it’s unique! Call us on 01236 722999 or email info@worldofwings.co.uk for more details.
